Background of the Study:
Indigenous conflict resolution mechanisms have long maintained peace in rural communities through traditional mediation, customary laws, and communal rituals. In Bende, Abia State, these practices are integral to resolving disputes and sustaining social harmony (Ibeh, 2023; Nwankwo, 2024). Unlike formal judicial systems, indigenous methods are often more accessible, culturally relevant, and sustainable in contexts where modern legal infrastructure is limited (Okoro, 2023). These traditional practices reinforce communal values and foster social cohesion. This study evaluates the effectiveness of indigenous conflict resolution in reducing disputes and enhancing community stability, particularly as modern societal changes challenge these traditional systems.

Statement of the Problem:
Despite their importance in maintaining rural peace, indigenous conflict resolution mechanisms in Bende face challenges due to modernization and evolving social dynamics. The exodus of traditional knowledge and the marginalization of these methods in formal conflict resolution create a gap in understanding their current effectiveness (Ibeh, 2023; Nwankwo, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of indigenous conflict resolution mechanisms in rural communities.
  2. To assess the impact of traditional dispute resolution on community cohesion.
  3. To recommend strategies for integrating indigenous and formal conflict resolution approaches.

Research Questions:

  1. How effective are indigenous conflict resolution mechanisms in resolving disputes in rural communities?
  2. What impact do traditional dispute resolution practices have on community cohesion in Bende?
  3. What strategies can enhance the integration of indigenous and formal conflict resolution methods?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Indigenous conflict resolution mechanisms significantly reduce disputes in rural communities.
  2. Traditional dispute resolution practices positively contribute to community cohesion.
  3. Integration of indigenous and formal conflict resolution approaches leads to improved conflict management outcomes.

Significance of the Study:
This study is significant as it highlights the critical role of indigenous conflict resolution in maintaining rural peace. Its findings will guide policymakers and community leaders in developing strategies that harmonize traditional and modern methods, thereby fostering sustainable community development.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is confined to evaluating indigenous conflict resolution mechanisms in rural communities within Bende Local Government, Abia State. It focuses on traditional dispute resolution practices and community cohesion, with limitations including potential subjectivity in qualitative data and the exclusion of urban dynamics.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Indigenous Conflict Resolution Mechanisms: Traditional methods used by communities to resolve disputes and maintain social order.
  2. Rural Communities: Non-urban settlements characterized by traditional lifestyles.
  3. Conflict Resolution: The process of addressing and resolving disputes in a peaceful manner.
